Introduction

Hi everyone! My name is Mary Tudtud and I am a biology major at OU. I really want to do something in bio fuel research when I graduate. I am a junior and my second semester at OU. I took Myth and Folklore last semester and I liked it very much. I thought this course would be a pretty good one to knock out my last humanities credit. It’s going to be a lot of hard work but hopefully it will help strive for creativity, like it did me.

I have two cats that live with me in Norman and one dog who lives back home with my parents. Jackson is a short hair dachshund who loves being spoiled by his family. My father even gets him fried rice just for him. My two cats are named Liam and Murphy. During Labor Day, last semester, I accidentally left the door open and Liam got out. My roommates and I looked everywhere for him but he was nowhere to be found for three whole months. Fortunately, one of my roommates had the bright idea of checking the Norman Animal Shelter. She checked it every day and we checked out every gray cat that came their way. Then one day, after Thanksgiving Break, there he was!

Winter break didn’t feel very…wintery? It was kind of warm during Christmas. There was also a tornado in my neighboring cities of Rowlett and Garland the day after Christmas. It was very sad to see the damage and destruction in the surrounding areas. However, it was amazing to see everyone come together to help those in need.
The remainder of my break was spent binge watching Girlmore Girls, Jessica Jones, and the Making a Murderer series. If you ever need to lose faith in humanity, you should watch Making a Murderer. I’ve never gotten so angry watching something I voluntarily wanted to watch.

  1. It was so much fun to read this Introduction knowing about the happy ending to Liam's saga, Mary! I remember reading in your blog last semester about him disappearing, and then you didn't say anything more, so I feared the worst... and then you wrote about finding him again it was like getting a Christmas present or something! One of my cats sometimes goes away for a few days (she's an outdoor cat and doesn't even like to come inside unless it is totally freezing out). I always worry, but she always comes back. It's a mystery: where does she go? We live out in the middle of nowhere. She's not the brightest cat in the world, so my husband thinks she honestly just gets lost. And he teases me for worrying because she always comes back. But I can't help it: I worry! Anyway, I am so glad you were reunited with your Liam, and I hope he has learned a lesson and will stay home where it is all nice and warm. :-)

  2. Hi Mary! It is nice to read a little about you. I cannot imagine being a biology considering science is my worst subject so props to you. Your animals are so cute, I am a big animal person myself as well. The story about Liam makes me happy that you were able to find him one day that’s awesome. I am sorry to here about the tornado, I saw pictures of it, so sad.

  3. Hey there Mary! Oh wow – I am so happy that you are striving for such incredible goals. Even though I am going to be in the oil industry, I will always be an environmentalist at heart (I am taking a fix it from the inside approach). Your pets are so adorable – my favorite picture is of Murphy, so lazy and perfect! I am so sorry about the damage from the tornadoes, but the fact that everyone was able to come together must have been such a wonderful feeling of love and comradery. I look forward to getting to read your posts!

  4. Nice to meet you, Mary!
My pup likes to wander, so I know very well the worry our beloved fur friends can cause! I'm happy to hear you were able to locate Liam -- it's incredible that he was safe and sound after so long on the loose, but so fortunate!

I also binge-watched Making a Murderer over the break, and I'm right there with you in the rage department. My roommate thought I was being a little ridiculous for getting so emotionally invested in a Netflix show, but it's impossible to avoid if you watch that show with any kind of hope for justice!

  5. Hi Mary! I love the pictures of your pets. I think one of the hardest questions for me to answer is if I am dog or cat person because I love both of them so much. I agree with you that winter did not feel wintery but I enjoyed being at home none the less.
    Nice to meet you

  6. Hi Mary, nice to meet you! My Mom has two cats that look like Liam. They are Russian Blues and their names are Ivan and Vonya. It's very good to hear that Liam finally got reunited with his family. It must have been hard with part of your family lost out in the world. I just recently finished the "Making A Murderer" series and I completely agree with you. It really makes you wonder what else was going on in that county.

  7. Our fur babies are our world aren’t they? I had a full bred persian cat for 14 years. He was so loveable and stupid. Truly. Stupid. Few forks short in the drawer.

Anyway, that is not good hearing about the Tornado. I hope everyone was okay. When I first went to OU back in the late nineties we had to suffer through the May 3rd tornadoes there. Couch tower was evacuated to Huff n Puff. (Do they still call it that?) That was a scary night.

  8. Hello Mary,
It is always nice to meet and get to know new people around. I was Microbiology first semester of my freshmen year, but changed because it was not something for me. It is great that you are enjoying it. I am glad that you found Liam even after three months. It was nice meeting and knowing you. I will be looking forward to read your posts.

  9. Hello, Mary!

Your critters are so cute! I also have a cat that lives with me in Norman, and I am terrified that one day he will escape. He’s a sweet little boy that’s never been outside, and I’m not sure he’d know how to protect himself if he got out. Checking the animal shelter was such a fantastic idea! I’m so glad it all worked out, and you got him home safely.

I hope you have a wonderful semester!

  10. Mary, This course is really forcing creativity out of me too! I am enjoying it much more than I had expected. That is so cute your dog likes fried rice, and what a happy story about your finding your cat after three months. I agree that this winter didn’t feel very wintery at all, which makes me sad because I like cold weather… at least for a little while. I heard about the tornado in Rowlett – so sad. Nice to “meet” you!

  11. Mary, it is nice to meet you and learn about your interests. I was never a fan of biology myself however I think biofuel research is very interesting as well. I am in need of my other humanities credit and was thinking of taking Laura's other course, Myth & Folklore. Is it similar to Indian Epics in the sense of class setup? Thanks for posting. -Tyler

  12. Hello Mary!

I love all of your furry family members! It cracks me up that your dog loves fried rice! I haven't heard that one before! I am really glad you and your family was safe during the tornadoes! Those can really cause some damage! I am happy it's been a little less "wintery" though this year. I feel like in Oklahoma you don't get the full winter experience. Usually you get wind and the wintery mix crap. It is nice to meet you Mary!

  13. Hi Mary, it's wonderful to have met you. I think it's cool that you took Myth and Folklore, but you decided to take this class as well. This is my first time taking a class that is set up like this, and I am really enjoying all the creative opportunities. Sadly, I cannot take Myth and Folklore because I am graduating next semester so I have to focus on my other requirements. But anyways, I agree this winter break was not very 'wintery' at all. I also spent most of the break binge watching Netflix shows. I finished Jessica Jones around Thanksgiving break, and I absolutely loved it! Are you watching anything else at the moment?

  14. Hi Mary,

I have to agree with you! Winter did not feel at all like winter at all this year! I am sorry to hear about the tornadoes and how they impacted you. I love your cats! I am actually debating on getting one out in our farm myself! You cat Liam reminds me of funny cat memes because of his color!

  15. Hi Mary,

It is nice meeting you. It must feel great with being close to graduating with a few semesters left! It must be cool being Biology major. What sparked your interest in this field and in bio fuels? I am glad that you were able to recover Liam from the shelter. Our pets are like our kids. They too want to adventure out and see the big world. Hopefully he learned his lesson. It was nice reading about you and I hope that you have a great semester. Good luck in your future endeavors and I wish you well as we transition to the second half of this semester. =)

  16. Hey Mary,

I'm glad that you got Liam back! After all, he does have a very specific set of skills, and you wouldn't want him to be taken... Yeah, I'm sure you've never heard that one before, but I couldn't resist :p. Anyways, props for being so far ahead in the class. I definitely wish I had front loaded more at the beginning of the semester myself.

  17. Hi Mary,
Your pets are so darn cute!! It always cracks me up how people compare dogs and cats’ personalities because from dogs we see the “I love you human” look compared to the cat’s “oh you’re here” look. They’re all so precious haha! I have heard such amazing things about Making a Murder so I might just have to watch it! Nice to meet you!
